Autumn Winter 2020 is here upon us, & we will welcome the change in weather, in clothes, make-up, in food, & of course in hair colors. Hair colors, like any accessory, reflect the mood for the season, and also make a statement. In India, hair trends for the season have been forecasted as WARM & WAVY!

The Indian skin undertones are largely warm, & the skin tones vary from light to deep. Hence the warm reflects complement our skin, whereas cool reflects can clash & may look out of place.

Tones for Global color change will be warm this season, at a base of 5 or 6.

This season, hair colors in India are trending at medium brown with warm tones/reflect. Depending upon the comfort level of the client, the effect of color can be subtle, or over the top drama. To pull off a color, the confidence and comfort of the client are more critical than any trend.

I feel that since most Indian hair sits between black and light brown, it is very exciting to explore the palette of awesome browns from SCHWARZKOPF, WELLA & L’OREAL PRO. I like to keep the base at a medium brown, as it gives me the freedom to move up or down during a balayage or highlight. This season, the colors in hair will be mostly painted with a balayage or dip-dye technique.

  • In browns, Cinnamon Brown, Honey Brown, Mushroom Brown, or a simple base of light brown is forecasted for AW 2020, India. I love the browns.
  • Reds will never go out of vogue, & this season too we are painting the town red! Indian skin can carry the deep & warm reds beautifully. Colors like wine red, auburn, cherry red, burgundy add so much glamour & depth to the dark Indian hair. Red immediately announces ARRIVAL, & hence is a favorite flavor for occasions.

I personally prefer to add a dash of red/violet/copper either as either reflect on the base of level 4, 5, or 6, or as a second color (if pure pigments) to a balayage. Red is a very strong, very powerful, and high maintenance color. This WILL means frequent salon visits & very particular & expensive home care. Also, if not done with a mature vision & perfect technique, red can shift from being sexy to being tacky real quick.

In India, cool reflects are not forecasted for this winter. Color brands have not launched any particular cool palette for India. Honey blonde, Mahogany, Ash-blonde, Gold are reflects that suit cool undertones or very light complexion. On a medium or deep complexion, it can be a clashing contrast and will add shade to the face.

In coloring techniques, Balayage is IN, & is here to stay for long because it is a pattern that grows out beautifully as the hair grows, and can be easily refreshed when it fades. So it never gets old or boring. Ombre is passé this season, and dip dye is making a comeback.

A good color job does not end in the salon; it starts there. Home care and regular follow up with the stylist is important to keep the color looking fresh and beautiful
