The Young Chronicle is an interactive newspaper that is linked to an app by the same name. The current version of the app was launched in January this year, and the paper was launched in August this year. The startup has been shortlisted by ET Power of Ideas in 2015 (when it was at a prototype stage), and is part of FBstart and SheLeadsTech, initiatives at Facebook. They recently also won the pitch competition at The Mom Achievers Summit by GurgaonMoms.

The Young Chronicle newspaper covers current affairs, interesting topics like Science, Literature, Technology, Space, Sports, and around 30 such sub topics. Each fortnight, a separate paper is released, catering to 7 different reading levels. A child has to choose from the sentences shown to him, a sentence of maximum difficulty that he/she can read easily. Once the sentence is chosen, a level is assigned to the child and he gets subscribed to a newspaper of the same level. The same philosophy is followed in the app as well. A child gets to see only articles written in a language pertaining to his/her level.

The papers also contain interactive features and are delivered at the customer’s doorsteps.

The quarterly plan costs as much as a pizza outing with the family.

The levels on the papers and the app are an outcome of extensive quantitative and text analysis, and mapping them to internationally used scientific reading levels. According to Ritika, CEO and Co-Founder, Curious Kids Media Tech Pvt. Ltd., the company that started The Young Chronicle, “The solution aims at offering a 360 degree solution, where a child can use the app to ask questions and share stories, and access multimedia content, where as the paper ensures that the child retains the physical contact with the world and receives curated content every fortnight.”

Varun, CTO and Co-Founder, Curious Kids Media Tech Pvt. Ltd., The Young Chronicle, feels that, “the most critical feature is the analytics platform this app is based on. The content on the app and activities in the paper, can be tracked, giving parents a good enough idea on the actual reading level of the child, and his interest and the lack thereof, towards different topics. This critical information, can help parents and educators take measures in channelising the child’s energy in the right direction.
